Inquirer Features Temple Lax

November 30, 2009

The front page of the sports section on Nov. 26 was filled with Temple Owls, and this time they weren’t talking about the football team’s historic winning streak. The Inquirer article instead featured the Temple women’s lacrosse team and their participation in the Friends of Jaclyn program.

The Owls had adopted a little sister – Devon Lam, a local 6-year-old with a terminal brain tumor. The article describes the team’s special relationship with the Lam family and the lessons they learned as a team through their participation in this program.

‘Psycho’ About Hitchcock

November 24, 2009

For fans of Alfred Hitchcock, 2010 will be a landmark year. The classic suspense film Psycho celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2010, which also is the 30th anniversary of the director’s death.

It also will be a banner year for John W. Law, SCT ’88, author of Alfred Hitchcock: The Icon Years. Law’s book will be released by Aplomb Publishing in January.

Reunited

November 19, 2009

Following  three days of celebration to mark the opening of the new School of Medicine facility, David Best, MED ’79, submitted a photo of reunited Medical School students from the Class of 1979. It was taken on Saturday, October 31 at the Medical School Reunion Banquet. Best says, “The Phillies may have lost, but we didn’t. It was a fun time!”

Book it.

The Alumni Association and the College of Education are holding their fourth annual holiday book drive to benefit four local elementary schools near Temple’s Main Campus. Last year, more than 700 books were donated, and we’re hoping for an even greater response this year. So far this year, nearly 600 books have been purchased.

A few of my absolute favorite childhood reads are on this year’s wish list: James and the Giant Peach, Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little. Help us share these classics as well as newer novels and educational books with eager young readers.

You can browse the teachers’ wish lists online at amazon.com. Once you’ve bought the books online, forward your confirmation e-mail to alumni.ed@temple.edu so that you can receive credit for a tax-deductible donation.

With his vast wardrobe of Temple gear, I would bet that alumnus Bill Cosby probably is the Owl who has granted Temple the most primetime television coverage—aside from the NCAA, of course. Last night, Cosby accepted the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. He’s the 12th awardee to be honored for humor with a social impact. Unfortunately, his Temple gear didn’t make an appearance.

Potluck Party

October 26, 2009

Temple football’s winning streak continues! After stomping the Rockets last weekend, the Owls are headed to Annapolis to take on the Midshipmen on Halloween.

Dave Yanovitz – one of our alumni club leaders down in the capitol area – is organizing a get-together in the Germantown Elementary School parking lot prior to the game. Let Dave know what you’re bringing by registering online at myowlspace.com/dcalumni.

Dress up as your favorite player, as Hooter the Owl or simply in your favorite Temple gear and join the Alumni Club of Washington, D.C. for an informal tailgate before the game.

Hoot! Hoot! Go Owls.

Back to the Future

October 19, 2009

I’m constantly amazed at how many women who were ahead of their time have graduated from Temple.  For example, The Wall Street Journal online recently profiled Bea States, CST ’54, MED ’67, one of  a handful of women of her generation to embark on a career in biochemistry. Born in the 1920s, States earned both an undergraduate degree in biology and a  medical degree from Temple. According to the Journal, States dedicated her professional career to studying childhood diseases.
